Even one of those traditional signifiers that a band has reached a certain threshold of established respectability – as the show is paused for a moment and a guy called Callum is given a pre-requested opportunity to propose to his girlfriend ahead of the couple’s favourite song – descends into sniggering farce as Callum proves elusive. Comprising of two Scousers and a Norwegian, it’s safe to say that first impressions of the Liverpudlian indie band The Wombats are that they are far from normal. Album Review: The Wombats ‘Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life’ Good, but not great attempt follow up to it’s magical predecessor. Review Summary: A fun but inconsistent album that contains patches of brilliance marred by some very poor filler. Even more so when “Pink Lemonade” was preceded by a rather personal anecdote in which Murphy went to Barcelona for inspiration... only to find his then-partner cheating on him. They have a lift. Their off-the-shelf melodicism, nimble rhythms and muddling lyrics – “I brought a lemon to a knife fight” gabs Murphy during one recent single, in a mixed metaphor worthy of Matt Goss – gets songs where they need to go. The Wombats Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life Kobalt Music Recordings. In February of 2018, Liverpool, England band The Wombats released Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life . During the kids-party-on-poppers apogee of Let’s Dance to Joy Division, they troll po-faced zealots of moody post-punk as giant coloured balloons bounce over the audience’s heads, four people dressed as actual wombats invade the stage and everyone goes bananas to a chant of: “Yeah, we’re so happy, we’re so happy!”. I highly encourage any fans of British pop music to check out this album, every song is a hit. The Wombats - Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life review: What is the soap that washes down 99% of dirt and bacteria together with all talent? The indie rockers had to stop their rendition of “Kill The Director” on three separate occasions as the sold-out crowd edged further towards the stage, causing a young fan to faint. The Liverpool natives have … If you’re pondering the continuing existence of late-noughties punky funsters the Wombats and wondering if there hasn’t been some sort of massive cosmic mix-up, an epic glitch in the matrix, you are probably not alone. The warm breeze gently rustled the pines, and the sea lapped at the sandy shores; all was calm in Maine on August 10th…except at Port City Music Hall where Liverpool indie-dance floor heroes, The Wombats, were about to make their debut in the Pine Tree State that night. A few of the songs are very electronic and although decent songs, they seem like the weaker spots on the album- "Give Me a Try" and "Headspace" being the low points for me. They have also done something different with each new album release, moving from the post-punk of their debut to the darker, synth-heavy This Modern Glitch and anthemic Glitterbug. Ever the professional, lead singer Murphy and co were able to pick up and finish the track without a hitch, after making sure everyone was OK (of course). Opening their set with new single and Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life opener “Cheetah Tongue”, set the precedence for the evening. The Liverpool natives have been on the scene for 15 years now, however it’s only recently that they have begun to hit the same heights as they did with their debut album A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation. Review Summary: These inconsistent Wombats will release a great Best Of compilation one day. But for the most part – be it Bee-Sting, a kind stodgy take on Beck’s Up All Night, or a stormy-swelling Foals-lite new song usefully titled I Don’t Know Why I Like You But I Do – they are simply OK, the quintessence of the three-star middling indie band. In listening to the first track on The Wombats, "Backfire at the Disco," I was immediately captivated by the energy that this band brings. At their worst, they degenerate into sleaze. So don't miss out on your chance to see The Wombats, live, in their forthcoming Australian tour in October 2011. “Turn” captures The Wombats’ witty lyricism in a chilling, vibrant new song centered on the indecision of relationships. But their songs are shrilly shrieked throughout by an IDs-out-at-the-bar young audience who, unless the Wombats’ debut was big among the under-10s back in 2007, suggests their popularity continues to respawn. Comprised of just the three original members – lead vocalist Matthew Murphy, bass guitarist Tord Overland Knudsen and drummer Dan Haggis – had outstanding chemistry. The Wombats were thrust into success in 2007 when debut ‘A Guide to Love, Loss and Desperation’ surfaced. In this guitar-averse age of pop and mumble rap they should be remembered as a kind of Blink-and-you-missed-them 182. Seeded towards the end of the last decade among a minor wave of chart-bothering milksop guitar-pop bands such as Scouting for Girls and Plain White T’s, for whom shaggy hair, skinny jeans, T-shirts and trainers were uniform (and on tonight’s evidence, still are), longevity never looked likely.
